When children are discouraged from expressing their thoughts or opinions, it is akin to pressing down the feathers of a baby bird just learning to fly.
As grown-ups, we inherit beliefs and wounds we carry so naturally that we mistake them for part of ourselves.
Are we truly living, or merely surviving our days? Have we become puppets of ideologies we never consciously chose? Have we stopped making intentional choices? Have we become sheep, blindly chasing the loudest noise?
Deeply personal journeys reveal the undermined struggles, unhealed wounds, and shades of courage they don’t notice they have grown into. Struggles might be extraordinary, but they’re made to believe that it’s ordinary. Such lives are laid bare, revealing the quiet struggles, difficult choices, and profound resilience that shape what we are taught to perceive as human.
What unites these stories, and perhaps ours, is not profession, gender, nationality, or circumstance. It is the quiet surrender of the mind. The gradual erosion of emotional intelligence. The conditioning that teaches survival instead of purpose, conformity instead of courage, obedience instead of understanding.
These are not merely stories next door. They are an invitation to recognise your lost self. To recognise the invisible prisons that continue to pollute your thoughts, your emotions, your choices, or perhaps all three.
Because the greatest prison is not always the one built around us. Sometimes, it is the one built within us.
This non-fiction collection, together with a research paper drawing upon the lives documented within it, lays the foundation for a broader body of research I am pursuing into how the beliefs we inherit, the wounds we carry and the experiences we encounter—at home, in school and across society—shape our economic decisions and, ultimately, the lives we lead. For readers, it is an invitation to reconsider the practices we follow unquestioningly, confront the questions we hesitate to ask and examine the burdens we inherit and pass on—a step towards rediscovering our long-lost sense of purpose.
